Moving collaboration and co-curation of class resources online can enrich classroom discussions and engage students in creation of their own knowledge acquisition. When this community is created and encouraged, learning becomes perpetual.

Developed in response to the rigid pedagogy of 19th Century industrial society, Progressive Education eventually lost momentum. As America comes to grips with the 21st Century world, however, the precepts of Progressive Education are once again finding favor.
Why? Mainly because the human skills needed in this century are very different from those in the last. A recent research study identified the skills students will need for future success: critical thinking, creativity, communications, curiosity, initiative, persistence and adaptability. These skills will be as important as language arts, mathematics and science.

Are we all born teachers? Vanessa Rodriguez thinks so. Often the discussion of how we teach is only had in relation to how we learn. So, how is it, then, that teaching can be seen in playgroups and preschools around the world — not just by the teachers, but by the children themselves?
In her book, The Teaching Brain, Rodriguez traces the evolutionary and developmental components of the brain, coming to the conclusion that the ability and inclination to teach is not something that arises; it is innate. And not only is it a developmental skill, it is a survival skill.
Academics weren’t always called professors. It was not until the fifteenth century that English-speakers began to use the term to describe those who taught in certain disciplines, at first divinity and, then, increasingly, the sciences. The honorific title did not enter the language until the 18th century.
Might it be better if academics thought of themselves as practitioners rather than as professors? A practitioner is someone actively engaged in a discipline or a profession. Some, in fact do: We increasingly speak about Research Professors, Teaching Professors, and Professors of the Practice.

Undergraduate and graduate schools of education need to be modernized. Like the entire education system, education schools are based on an anachronistic, industrial model.Education schools need to be reinvented. The present demands repair, the future requires replacement.
However, the question is not whether to change quickly or slowly, a lot or a little. The issue is to know the purpose of a college.
According to Steve McLaughlin, the survival skill students need most today is the ability to create their own jobs. He calls that Drownproofing 2.0, and that’s part of the Georgia Tech mission -- to prepare students to survive and thrive in the contemporary economy, despite all the pressures new graduates face.
