Times Higher Education (THE) published its 2018 ranking of the best research institutes. Unlike the university rankings, institutions from Mexico, Spain, Norway, Finland and Canada reached the top 20.

Although most research institutes do not have the recognition they deserve, they are prolific centers of innovation. Generally, these institutes have no teaching obligations, which means they can focus on research.

Research institutes are diverse, and their activities vary according to their mission. Some centers conduct ambitious long-term research with uncertain returns, while others focus on short-term market-oriented research, development work, problem-solving tasks, or technical assistance.

Its research focuses on Biological Sciences and Mental Illness, Neuropharmacology and Neurogenesis, Genetics, Pharmacogenetics, Neurochemistry, Molecular Neurobiology and Neurochemistry of Addictions, among others.

This classification is based on the influence of the institutes' citations between 2013 and 2017. THE researchers point out that although there are many medical centers in the ranking, this is a reflection of their abundance and quality.
