Google launched a new search engine to access millions of public data repositories aimed at journalists and scientists.
Available in beta version, Google Data Search allows its users to find datasets hosted on the site of an editor, a digital library or personal web pages. The searches provide information on who created the dataset, when it was published, how the data was collected, what are the terms to use it and download formats.
This search engine provides organized access to free datasets that were previously difficult to find or whose existence was unknown on topics of environmental and social sciences, government data and data provided by news organizations. For example, anyone can explore information from NASA or browse Harvard University archives.
For all those who want to share their data through this search engine, Google recommends adopting the schema.org open standard to describe the information. As more open access repositories use the schema.org standard, the variety and amount of information available will grow.
Undoubtedly, Google Data Search will be a fundamental tool in the journalistic, educational and research practice.
