Early career academics are now required to possess a “superhero-like" ability to multitask if they want to get a job. The ability to balance teaching and research is no longer enough to gain a first position in academia, according to a new study.
The report, titled “Academic superheroes? A critical analysis of academic job descriptions”, also notes the highly specific descriptions of the interpersonal skills required by applicants, along with the need to show links to industry or international institutions. This “new academic…is a multitalented, always ready and available worker [...] the ‘academic super-hero’.”
Last semester, I ceded control of class to my students. I didn’t just give them room to speak. I asked them to design the syllabus, the assignments and even the grading rubrics. “But!”—my colleagues asked—“How could they be trusted to do rigorous work if they were designing assignments? Wouldn’t they just do the minimum required?”
Udemy announced that more than 10 million students have taken one of its courses. Meanwhile, in the U.S., there were about 13 million students working toward a four-year degree during fall 2015 semester. This is just another example of the rising popularity of online education as college costs have boomed. Dennis Yang, Udemy CEO, says traditional education is not keeping up, "Things are changing quickly but what we learn in school and how we’re teaching is the same."
On average, 75 out of every 100 full-time faculty members at four-year colleges are white. Five are black, and even fewer are Hispanic. The underlying principle of the Padagogy Wheel is that it is the pedagogy that should determine our educational use of apps. It’s all very well to come across an exciting new app and to think to yourself, ‘That’s really cool, now how can I use it in the classroom?’, but what you need to do at the same time is to think about how that app might contribute to your set of educational aims for the program you are teaching.
The Babson Survey Research Group released its last annual survey of the online-education landscape, the Online Report Card – Tracking Online Education in the United States. One of its key findings is that more than one in four students (28%) now take at least one distance education course (a total of 5,828,826 students, a year‐to‐year increase of 217,275).
MOOCs are one of the most fascinating developments in higher education. MOOCs have forced many into a reboot when it comes to the use of technology in learning. This is a necessary condition for progress in terms of learning, teaching, demand, pedagogy, curricula, assessment, accreditation, culture, cost and role.
The term design thinking gets bandied around a lot these days, but what does it really mean? Design thinking it’s about creating as much value as possible for your customers. It’s the idea that innovation has a structure and a rhythm to it. Design thinking is a framework that you can use to solve complex, open-ended problems with well-instrumented solutions.
MOOC provider Coursera is launching a new series of courses that offer something a little more tangible than a certificate. Coursera announced a dozen project-based courses, in which learners complete tasks such as building an Android app, creating a website and writing a pilot episode for a TV show.
