Blackboard creates accessibility tool

Blackboard Ally

Blackboard Ally

On Global Accessibility Awareness Day, Blackboard announced the release of its accessibility solution called Blackboard Ally, which focuses on making digital course content more accessible.

Blackboard Ally integrates with the learning management system (LMS) and automatically checks course materials for common accessibility issues. The tool generates a range of more accessible alternatives for the instructor's original content including Semantic HTML, audio, ePub, and electronic Braille, while providing teachers with guidance on how to improve the accessibility of their course materials.

"We recognize that providing access to accessible content can be a significant challenge for both instructors and institutions," said Nicolaas Matthijs, Product Manager of Blackboard Ally, in a statement. "The goal with Blackboard Ally is to increase awareness of course content accessibility and provide support for teaching students of all learning styles and abilities."

More than 30 institutions are already using it and Blackboard Ally is currently available in the latest release of Blackboard Learn (Original experience) and the Canvas LMS.
